How to Choose the Right Paint Sheen for Your Home: A Professional Painter’s Guide
When homeowners are considering paint colors, they often overlook one of the most important factors for how a color performs: sheen. The sheen, or gloss level, affects not only how your paint looks, but also how well it performs over time. At Groovy Hues Painting of Scottsdale, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Should I use flat, eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss?” Unfortunately, there’s not a simple answer.
What Is Paint Sheen?
Paint sheen refers to the amount of light reflected from a painted surface. Lower sheens absorb and scatter light, creating a softer appearance, while higher sheens reflect more light, creating a shinier finish. Generally, the higher the sheen, the more durable and washable a paint becomes. However, high-gloss finishes will make dents, patches, and wall imperfections more noticeable.
Understanding the Paint Sheen Spectrum
Flat (Matte)
Flat paint has the least amount of shine, providing a smooth, elegant appearance. It’s the best of all the sheens at hiding drywall imperfections, patches, and uneven textures. That being said, it tends to be less washable than higher sheens and will show more marks in higher-traffic areas. We recommend using flat finishes in ceiling, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and areas of your home that don’t receive much traffic.
Eggshell
Eggshell provides a subtle, low-luster finish with more durability than flat paint. It strikes a great balance of beauty and practicality. Still, it tends to show more imperfections compared to flat finishes. We recommend using eggshell finishes in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices.
Satin
Satin finishes offer a soft sheen and increased durability. These finishes offer the great washability and moisture resistance, making them ideal for busy households. Unfortunately, surface imperfections stick out heavily through these sheens. We recommend using satin finishes in hallways, family rooms, children’s bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss adds a noticeable shine while offering exceptional durability and moisture resistance. However, these finishes require much more intense surface preparation to address any imperfections and create a proper painting surface. These sheens are recommended for trim, baseboards, doors, cabinets, kitchens, and bathroom.
Gloss & High Gloss
Gloss & high gloss sheens offer maximum shine, durability, and stain resistance. They’re easy to clean and offer a dramatic visual impact that makes a space pop. Unfortunately, these sheens require the most preparation out of all of the sheens. Gloss & high gloss is recommended for luxury cabinetry, front doors, furniture, and accent millwork.

Special Considerations for Arizona Homes
Living in the Sonoran Desert presents unique challenges when it comes to sheen selection:
- Exterior Stucco: For Scottsdale’s stucco homes, low-sheen or satin finishes are typically preferred as they help minimize uneven surface texture while providing durability and UV resistance.
- Intense Sunlight: Arizona’s strong sunlight wears heavily on exteriors and also increases light reflection in interiors. A sheen that may look subtle in a paint store might appear significantly shinier outdoors or have a totally different character in a space.
- HOA Communities: Many of Scottsdale’s and Paradise Valley’s HOA communities prefer lower-sheen finishes on exterior walls to maintain a uniform appearance throughout the neighborhood.
